What is the difference between military grade m4 and the m4 that is available to civilians?

Besides that the military model can go fully auto what is the other differences between the m4 available for purchase to us and the one that the military is using.|||in the us m4's for civilians and the military are made both by colt defense. Civilian version in the us of m4's fires only in semi-automatic, meaning you pull the trigger and only one bullet is fired and you need to pull the trigger again to fire another bullet just like a hand gun. The military version fires in semi-automatic mode which I have explained already and in 3-round burst.3-round burst means that when you pull the trigger 3 rounds are fired but if u pull the trigger and release it before the m4 fires all 3 rounds you 茅ither fired only 1 or 2 rounds. If you fired only 2 rounds in your 3 round burst mode because you release the trigger before it can fire all 3 rounds the next time u pull the trigger only 1 round will be fired (it does not reset to fire 3 rounds it needs to complete the 3 rounds first).Their is also a military version that has semi-auto fire but the 3-round burst is replaced with a full auto mode of fire.Civilians in the us are not allowed to have burst or full auto fire in their fire arms except if you have a Goverment license to own it which is expensive, takes very long to process and needs that you will be back ground checked more thoroughly. very few us civilian are given these exemptions. Outside they look the same but inside the civilian version are made differently from the military version because it is altered that you cannot drop in military parts inside civilian version or modifying it to fire burst or full auto. In short civilian m4s fires only in semi auto and cannot be converted to burst or full auto by dropping in parts from military m4's or even machining it on the gun shop while military version fires in semi auto and in either 3-round burst mode or full auto mode. So you need to let your m4 fire all 3 rounds by not releasing the trigger immediately so the next pull would fire 3 rounds again. Full auto fire means 1 pull of the trigger and it fires all the rounds in your magazine unless you release the trigger before it can empty your mags. It is very wasteful and u can hardly hit anything with that at 100 yards because the rifle will be difficult to control and aim that is why most assault replaced the full with a burst mode. I hope that answers your question|||Technically, the version available to the civilian market is known as the AR-15. They come in the "M4" pattern, but "M4" is just the military designation (although, I believe that Bushmaster, in court, won the right to call their M4-pattern rifles by the "M4" title).

To answer your question, it depends on which model you're looking at. The main comparison is regarding "mil-spec". There are civilian-legal rifles out there, such as the Colt LE 6290, that have the same specs as the M4, less the "fun-switch".

Keep in mind that being mil-spec doesn't always mean it's better. For example, the M4 comes with a lightweight barrel, but some may prefer a heavier barrel on their rifle. It doesn't mean the quality is any worse, it just varies by taste.

Here is a good chart that shows which rifles have which features:
