He was comparing the military life to the civilian. Is this true? And if so, how many hours do military active member work per week?|||LOL...military doesnt work 40 hours a week... no... they work LONGER.
6:30-7:30 PT
0900-1700 duty hours
9 hour days IF youre lucky because most units keep you until between 1800 and 1900.... and if youre ramping up for deployment or youre out in the field then you are working twice that.
Also take into consideration the 12-24 hour duties such as CQ and Staff Duty...
Also take into consideration those that dont work regular duty hours such as Firefighters and Military Police... who often work 12 hour shifts...not including PT, weapons draw, guard mount, and paperwork.
And lets not forget the actual deployments... where you could be out in the middle of nowhere on a mission for weeks at a time and the only sleep you get is 30 minutes here and there and done in rotation with your team members.
The military does more before 9am than most people do all day.|||It varies considerably, as everyone else said. While not on deployment with my Army unit, it was 40 to 50 hours. Not counting 24-7 duty On deployment it was 80 hours plus a week, no days off, for months at a time. Longest stretch without a day off was seven and half months. Maybe eight. I don't know

|||while i was in and deployed out to sea i worked the flight deck 18 hours a day. sometimes we would take naps in the cat walk and wouldnt go to our racks or shower at all. get a couple hours of sleep and do it all over again. every job is different.

|||So true. At my first duty station I worked until 1800-1900 everyday %26amp; it was nothing going on. Our SGT just wanted us to be there just because. I got to Germany and I was only workin 36-45 hrs. a week which was great. Now we have new leadership and I work 60-84 hrs. a week!!! I'm worn out!

|||The normal duty day was 0730 - 430pm. However there was CQ, SDO, Guard Duty that could and ofter did result in a 36 to 48 hour duty day. There were field exercises that could last a few hours of a month or more Reforger 3 - 4 months). Then there were deployments to varied and exotic places. But back in garrison:
up at 400am go to the unit. 530 am get the troops out for PT 630 am shower/shave/dress/breakfast. 730 - 430 normal mission stuff fly do maintenance, teach classes, take classes. 500pm give remedial PT to those that could not make morning PT. 730 pm officers call 900pm home and household chores and get ready for next day. Repeat as necessary.
The military is not an 9-5 job. a soldier/marine/sailor/airman is expected to be ready for duty 24/7. Yes there are some days where you do nothing and are home by lunch, but there are other days that will last for weeks.
The military is NOT a 9-5 job.|||It depends. Are you on deployment? Getting ready for deployment (work-ups)? Do you have duty on the weekend? It also depends on your rank and responsibilities, plus your specific job (rate or MOS, depending on service).
Average is 7-9 hours per day, M-F... additionally some weekends. If you are deployed, you are "on duty" all the time, stand watches daily and don't get weekends off (work Mon-Sat, Sunday is "holiday routine" but you still have watches to stand).
Of course you get every federal holiday off (unless you are deployed or on duty), paid vacation time, non-taxed housing/food allowances, and free travel. So it kind of evens itself out. On my last deployment I was able to travel to Croatia, Bosnia, the Seychelles, Jordan, Greece, Italy, France and Portugal.
I work approximately 7am-4pm during the week, depending on what we have going on... usually a break from 1130-1230 or 1300 for lunch. I stand duty every 6 days, and while on deployment I stood watch every 16-20 hours for 5 hours at a time. My division (electricians) stand watch every 16 hours underway and have 3-4 hours of maintenance to complete per day (either underway or in port). Of course, it varies a lot by service, job and rank.|||This question is very broad. You might as well go ahead and ask how many hours someone with a job works. One thing is true, the military more often than not doesn't work 9-5. There are usually 12 or 24 duties that come up, you may be part of a night crew, and above all you simply work whatever the mission requires.
Personally, I've worked literally non-stop for months (barely even getting time to sleep), and have had other months where I practically didn't work at all.|||It does depend on their job, my husband is active duty Air Force. He is in the Security Forces Squadron, a lot of time his squadron is on 12 hour shifts. They would have to be there an hour early to arm up and listen to what is going on. Then if he was in a patrol car, he wouldn't be home till 2 hours late if he was lucky. He was lucky if he didn't put in 60 or more hours a week. He said he wishes that he would get paid by the hour sometimes. That is why he switched from working that particular job to a different job in the section that works Monday thru Friday. Every job has it's ups and downs.|||Depends a lot on your unit.
In my experience we typically worked 9 hours on weekdays, plus unit PT (30 minutes each) 3 times a week, plus any guard duty (averaged about 1 hour a week for me).
In the dirt it was 12 on/12 off 7 days a week plus around 6 hours of guard duty every week.
But even if you're not at work you're "on call" all the time. I've worked many a evening past 1630 and many a weekend.|||When on base (in Garrison) about 40+ hours a week.
When in the field you get about 4 hours of rest time a day... it could be an hour here, and 3 hours there... Sometimes you get more... So it's about 120-140 hours a week
But are we counting the time spent doing PT? That's another 1.5 hours added per work day|||it depends on the branch and you rating/mos.
if your in the army stateside what is there to do other than watches if deployed think about it. long hrs
if navy seaside few hrs duty section 24hrs
at sea 12on 12off plus GQ's and drills|||Oldmarine is being conservative. Most of the units I served with usually worked 50 or 60 hours a week. It all depended on what we had going on at any particular time. Good luck to you.|||I'm currently working 84+ hour weeks.. then again I'm deployed.
Right before we left we were on really light shifts (like 3 hour days.. it was awesome) then 7-9 hour days the rest of the time. depends on how much BS they can come up with for you.|||Anywhere from 0 all the way to 168, seriously.
But the average, I think, is about 50 hrs.|||Anywhere from 40 to 112 hours a week.
You could work five 8 hour days or seven 16 hour days.
I once worked 82 weeks for 6 months straight without a day off.|||right now my husband is working 12 hours a day six days a week and at minimum of 4 on the seventh.|||It does depend on your MOS but I venture to say that the average is the same as in the civilian world, 40 hours a week!|||24/7/365|||Definitely depends on your mos, the thing about being a soldier is you don't get to have a point during your contract where you're not a soldier. If you're sick and can't work, you're still expected to do the soldier thing, you can't just call and say you're not coming. Soldier is a 24/7 job. If you get a paperwork or human resources or some kind of admin job, you will probably sit at a desk and pick at a computer for 40 hours a week like clockwork. But seriously, you want to join the military to sit at a desk or do some boring **** on a set schedule??? On a busy week at my job I'll work maybe 65 hours. In a slow week if you want to call what we do in the shop work i'll do it maybe 30.
