Is it important to have a military background to be a President?

I found it interesting because most people want to vote McCain because he has a military background since he was a POW. But does it really matter to have a President who has a military background? If so why? Don't they have military advisers to advise him anyway? Personally, I think it is better that the President does not have any military background because then he/she can see the picture as a whole and he/she can analyze them in every different angle, not just in the military tactics only. But i would love to hear what you think.|||NO, But lets see McCains experience?

Crashed 5 planes!

Came in at the bottom of his class!

Made 13 tapes for the Vietnamese against the USA!

I think I'll go with Obama!|||Obama sets free terrorist! You failed logic class...

He has also said Israel will no longer be protected by us- that indicates the end of the world! Read your Bible! (I know since he said that he said he now wants a Peace Treaty- but that is a cover- just like the Bible says!)"

What in the hell is that supposed to do with his question?

Military background certainly helps the cause. It presents the notion that you truly love your country, and know the military's way of operating from some extend (depending on your prior rank). Many presidents haven't had any military background. Granted, military background is more of a bonus for a presidential candidate than an actual advantage when making presidential decisions. Choose your president over his positions. Not his background (unless of course his background turned out to be horrible).|||BO is unfit to Leader of our great Nation not because he never served in the military--

BUT because he is not honest--lacks ethical standards--lacks finance savvy--lacks international diplomacy experience--lacks business experience--or executive experience for those of you who don't know what I'm talking about--he lacks plans that DON'T change every time the public opinions polls change--he lacks first hand experience with foreign diplomats--he's too green in the senate to have grown into that job--much less is he capable to run a whole massive country like ours...

BO is just not qualified for the job--and does not meet the base qualifications to hold the job. Simple.

McCain will do a far better job---Independent voted for McCain!|||If anything he would be able to see more of the picture as a whole if he had military experience. He could view things from a different perspective in my opinion. And having Military Experience isn't about having Military Tactics (takes decades of military experience to become a high ranking member). It's because you know the man has Character. You know the person was willing to put down his life in order to defend our nation. These guys are separated from their families for months at times even years. A little over 5 in McCain's case. This is the reason people tend to vote people with Military Experience. Would YOU be willing to get it all for the good of your country?

God bless our troops.|||It could be useful.

However, McCain doesn't have substantial military background. He was a bad soldier and became a hero because he was a POW for many years. This is not nothing but it doesn't mean that he was a great soldier or a strategic head. His father and his grandfather perhaps but not him.

People should stop claiming that McCain is an expert in military issues just because he served. Many people served, which doesn't make them experts.|||Excuse me, but Barney Frank wants to cut the military budget by 25%! I doubt that he was in the military...he is, afterall, gay, and that's not a slanderous statement...it is a fact and everyone knows it! A military background is very necessary. That person gets to see and better understand the needs of the military. And as far as McCain is concerned, my God, that man endured torture for 5-1/2 years. Talk about perserverance! That, by the way, is an absolute necessity for the presidency....perserverance!

McCain/Palin 2008|||it is important to know what its like to be in the Boots of a military man that is fighting for us so we do not have to.

seeing the President is the one that will be sending them off to war.

someone that has been there will think about it alot longer before doing it when they know all sides of it.

so yes it is important.|||No.... We have had Reagan (who was in the military but he was a "celebrity soldier" in the 40's -- he was really not a typical soldier who didn't even go to the boot camp.... he just made political pro-WWII spots in a uniform... most of us would not say that was a "miltary" background), Lincoln, Clinton, FDR.... these are just examples of succesful presidencies.|||Obama is clueless, he has already challenged Pakistan, 160 Million well trained troops, nuclear weapons...he is dangerous! He has also said Israel will no longer be protected by us- that indicates the end of the world! Read your Bible! (I know since he said that he said he now wants a Peace Treaty- but that is a cover- just like the Bible says!)|||Personally, I think it is better to not have that background. I think a person with no military experience can see the big picture when it comes to military exercises. That's what you have military advisers for.|||A president must understand that communism is not dead ! They will undermine the USA. they will love to see it fall to its knees. There is a saying the one with the biggest stick wins ! If any president makes the military take the back seat we will be over thrown.Obama plans on cutting our forces and technology to the bare bone. That's a dangerous game to play|||Nope! Just think of Franklin D. Roosevelt who brought us through the depression and then World War 11. He was paralyzed from the waist down. Never spent a day in the military.

I'm an old paratrooper and the only thing I learned about the military is that your friends die.

thanks|||I think bush had such a hatred for the national guard, that he made them go fight in Iraq instead of being here in America to help people during Katrina and all the fires and flooding and hurricanes and tornadoes where they were supposed to be.|||It doesn't matter but it should. Considering the President will be Commander in Chief of our Armed Forces.

Or if Obama gets in office ... our Unarmed Forces.|||While since the president makes his decisions from top members in the military. I don't think that it matters. People have to remember Presidents don't just rely on their own answers|||Moderately important|||I don't think it matters, but the the fact that both candidates are liars does matter!|||VERY!|||if you don't know how it works then how can you use it.|||No, but judgment and policy are.|||Not really but Obama has nothing going for him..to be POTUS..he is an empty suit|||No...not at all...|||not at all.|||No

|||only if we were a fascist government that needs to crush everyone under our bootheels to feel secure

but we aren't

|||I don't think it matters.|||It didn't matter with Clinton. Many of our USA Presidents did not serve.|||I don't think it matters one way or the other.
