I want to join the military; but i dont want a career in the military I just want to join, serve,go to a good college and look for a good job (not in the military). Ive gotten all different answers from all different sources. Most have said the Navy.|||I wouldn't join if you just want tuition assistance.|||I served active duty army and national guard. My opinion is the army national guard. I get my soldiers into school (none have deployed or were active duty prior). My guys get Federal Tuition Assistance (which pays 100% tuition), state tuition assistance (which is about $300 bucks for books), and qualify for Chapter 1606 of the GI Bill (which a full time student makes about $600 a month). You could also pay into a GI Bill kicker which adds onto that but you have to ask your recruiter for that.
Myself, I use my Montogremy GI bill (chapter 30), which I paid $100 a month for a year, and now I make about $1400 dollars a month. But I am about to begin Army ROTC which will earn me an extra $500 for my junior and $600 for my senior year and I qualify for a National Guard scholarship (which I don't need anyways since my school is all paid for already).
The problem is active duty is that you can only go if your commander approves you, and if you have time. I was a mechanic so I would stay in the motor pool till late at night and be back first thing in the morning. I also have heard that the navy and the air force have been cutting back on their tuition assistance programs making it harder to get.
In the sources are some links for ya|||The Navy would probably be the worst branch for this. You will likely enlist for three years which is the minimum to get your full GI Bill benefits and the smallest contract currently available. Every branch has the Tuition Assistance Program which allows you to attend college on base or near base as your work schedule allows but only the Navy restricts this program so that you can't use it your first year. So if you attend college your first year in the Navy you will be out of pocket for that.
If you are really interested in college then find a good admin job in any service except the Navy and go to it. You'll have the time to attend college in the evenings. Good luck!|||It depends on what you want to be, the Navy, for example, has great programs in colleges that have engineering programs|||First , think about this .. the military is NOT there for you to have a way to get into college .. you probably are going to only get enough money to pay for half of a public university.. I think you should evaluate other options|||The military does not send you college unless you either go to an academy or through rotc or through medical school. What you mean is the technical training. The navy does have some of the best technical training of all the branches. The nuclear program is really good but it is very intense and it is very hard to get into. What the military does offer is tuition assistance while you are in. You can get up to $4500 per year for part time college courses. You typically have to be in for a year to get this. As long as you earn your honorable discharge, you can then take advantage of the gi bill which will pay all tuition at state colleges for a 4 year degree. You also get $1000 per year (4 years total) for books and another $1000 per year for fees. On top of that you get basic allowance for housing while you are enrolled full time. It is based on the geographic location of your school but it is usually around $1500 per month and is non-taxable.
By the way, if you are trying to get a really good job, you need to study and take practice asvab tests so you are prepared for the tests. The better your score, the more choices you have.|||Pros and Cons for all. Army offers best education, better college quality but harder to get into. Air force colleges are ok, and if you want to go in the military for a short time and look for a good job, Air force all the way. I went to a Navy academy and am very happy with what they did. There is never a best, just pros and cons.|||All branches offer the same Montgomery GI Bill. Search it and learn.
