What branch of the military should I go to to be a firefighter?
I am looking into joining the military, and after wards starting a career as a firefighter. Right now I am in college pursuing a dual major, and participating in the first few stages of the ROTC program. I've been doing some research and it looks like military fire programs have a lot of training, but few incidents. Any information at all would be greatly appreciated.|||Any branch would be helpful but consider where you want to be a firefighter -- in the mountains of California (brush and tree), major airport, harbor, city. each branch would have an edge on the training provided -- the Coast Guard is a good choice on the High Seas or the Air force with Aviation fuel and tankers of oil. The Navy has their carriers which is like a mini city and the Army has helicopters and tanks and housing for a more general training. Find out the adventure you like and ask the recruiters if anything they offer will make you perhaps opt to stay in the military-- they need young leaders for the Future -- your specialization in an area that the Military can be used is not only an asset to our country but a challenge for you -- Good Luck and Thank You for your service.|||As a former Navy Submariner, I would recommend looking into the Navy or Coast Guard for training to become a firefighter. The reason being is that the number one hazard on board a ship is fire, whether it be from an simple electrical fire, or from oil which must be put out to salvage lives, ammunition, and equipment. As a submariner all personnel are trained in fighting fires because it is crucial that fires are put out immediately as they will destroy the oxygen supply on board. On surface ships they have their own divisions that essentially only fight fires and prevent flooding. Most ships these personnel are Damage Controlmen. If you are currently obtaining a bachelor's degree, then the Navy will opt to make you an officer, and thus you will never get the hands on experience you are probably seeking. As a Navy enlisted you will continually train on board the ship for various different fire casualties, and receive training from various Navy Training Centers specifically designed for fire simulations. Also, while I was stationed in Pearl Harbor, the Navy maintained a Fire Fighter Trainer for Civilian Firefighters.|||Navy or Coast Guard.|||If you want to be a firefighter you should go into the navy because to my knowdlge they are the only branch that still has active duty firefighters the army has firefighters but they are all reservist and national guard they did away with active duty firefighters
