Which Military agency and member accompanies the President on trips? Are they there to provide security, along with the secret service, or is it a tradition?|||All Branches support the president. But the helo he flys in is called marine one the marines are with the president all most all the time.|||Ok the answers you've gotten are only half correct. True all branches support the movements of the President (POTUS), but what is not exactly true are a few of the other answers. The "football" isn't carried by an Army WO, there is a rotating schedule and the football is handed off to the member whose turn it is at that time, they can be from any of the main four branches. The Marines you see in ref to; "every time you see him on tv coming off a plane or some other thing it seems there is always a marine standing there" is when he gets off Marine One, the Presidential helo, mostly seen on the White House Lawn or Camp David, however is you watch POTUS come off an airplane it's was Air Force One, and Airmen will be at the bottom of the steps.
In addition the Air Force provides the chase planes as well, there are two of them that go with the President where ever he goes. One is a cargo plane that carries the limo and other gear (ground communications gear, etc) and the Secret Service advance team, which arrives before the President, sometimes by 24 hours or more.
So are you seeing a trend? Air Force takes the lead on the fixed wing, Marines take the rotary wing aircraft.
Historically, the Army had the duty of helo transport on Army One from 1957 to 1974 When the U. S. had a Presidential Yacht (the USS Mayflower 1905-1929, USS Sequoia 1933-1977, USS Potomac 1936-1945) the Navy took the lead.
The Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, Coast Guard and Executive One callsigns are only used by aircraft when the President is aboard, the Vice Pres, First Lady, Secretaries and other authorized persons are flown with the callsigns Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, Coast Guard and Executive Two. Executive One/Two are used for non-military aircraft.
The other chase plane has a classified mission but if never far from POTUS when he is away from Washington and is flown by an Air Force Pilot and has a mostly Air Force crew but has other branches' members available, too.
The President also travels with a member of his/her National Security Council who can be from any or the main four branches but usually wear civilian clothes.
The White House Communications Agency (WHCA) staffed by the main four branches, also travel with the President, though they fly with the gear on the cargo plane. When Geo W Bush was POTUS WHCA had a permanent staff just off his ranch in Texas.
I hope this answers your question without going overboard. If you have any interest in finding out more about the transportation of POTUS check out http://www.presidentsusa.net/transportation.html|||A US Army Warrent Officer or occassionally a Commnissioned Officer accoumpanies the President at all times - he carries the "Football". The code machine to activate nuclear weapons.
On the occasion of President Clinton assuming office, the football carrier attempted to brief the president on his mission and was told by a staffer "we don't talk to the military."|||All Branches support the president depending on trip. They support, security including hit and switch, communcations from white house com center, sit rep from pentagon. Yes all braches and ranks.|||everytime you see him on tv coming off a plane or some other thing it seems there is always a marine standing there
